Paul McIntosh 2007
fourteen years old about the same as that old truck
Ten tons of barley on lots more today with any luck
Found some gears I and took a breath pulled my cap down on my face
roared into that sunriset road proudly pulled into my place
what a dream to drive that chevy I felt like I was on the lamb
sat up tall to fool the cops as if they don't know who I am
I rode it all the way to town, feelin like a king
I made it man and I got in line what a thrill to drive that thing
right down the road runnin all alone
old man sent me out said take this grain and get it sold
I'm pullin my first load
Great Big men home brew smiles stare with hope into the sky
neighbors visit over hoods last nights dust burns their eyes
hey squirt have a shot of this, put some hair on that skinny chest
watcha haulin besides that grin, ya the first one always feels the best
CHORUS
I've hauled many thousand tons in twenty years or more
And I guess we shared some beauties as we lined up to that door
but there never was a sun that rose above that harvest road
like the sun that lit the morning of the day of my first load
CHORUS
